Weekly Roundup: June 1-7

Bike month was a true success! Here are a couple highlights:

Department of Environmental Quality Bike Repair Day

We helped DEQ employees with basic bike repairs and tune-ups on their way to work, making bike commuting a little smoother and more accessible during Bike Month.

Bike Bonanza

Bike Bonanza was a great kickoff to Bike Month. We spent the afternoon helping riders tune up their bikes and get prepared for all of the rides and events happening throughout May.

Farmer’s Market Bike Bus

The first-ever Farmer’s Market Bike Bus was a huge success, led by Thomas Weybrecht, bringing 18 participants from downtown Raleigh to the NC State Farmers Market safely by bike. It was a fun and approachable way to introduce more people to group riding and bike commuting.

GGC: Bike Month Scavenger Hunt

As part of Bike Month in collaboration with Oaks & Spokes, participants gathered on May 16 at the GGC container by Lake Raleigh for a bike navigation scavenger hunt across NC State Centennial Campus and Dorothea Dix Park. Before heading out, Jeff and Debra Rezeli introduced basic navigation skills and explained how to use the custom orienteering-style maps — with no phones or GPS allowed.

Bikes Mean Business: Self-Care Ride

The Bike Library hosted the Bikes Mean Business: Self-Care Ride in partnership with Oaks & Spokes and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance. With around 30 participants, the Women/Trans/Femme ride highlighted several Raleigh small businesses that prioritize wellness, self-care, and community.

Ride of Silence

Oaks & Spokes hosted the Ride of Silence, where participants gathered to honor individuals impacted by car-related cycling accidents and fatalities. The evening included powerful personal stories and served as an important reminder that while Bike Month is a celebration of cycling, there is still significant work to be done to make biking safer and more equitable for everyone.

The Long Shot Ride

The Long Shot Ride made its return this Bike Month, with Mia and Thomas leading about 20 participants out to Big Dom’s and Brew Coffee in Cary. Designed as a longer version of Espresso Express, the ride encourages riders to explore destinations outside of downtown Raleigh at a casual, social pace.

Critical Mass Raleigh

Critical Mass was, once again, a huge success. The monthly ride continues to bring together cyclists of all kinds to make a visible statement about the importance of sharing the road and building a more bike-friendly Raleigh.

Enough reflecting, on to this weeks events!

We're always looking for volunteers to support the Greenway Gear Collective Container on Saturdays and Sundays! We offer two volunteer shifts each day: a morning shift from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM and an afternoon shift from 12:00 PM–4:00 PM.

No bike mechanic experience is required to volunteer. Most shifts involve helping with container setup or breakdown, performing basic bike maintenance such as fixing flat tires, pumping tires, lubricating chains, tightening bolts, and assisting with upkeep of our rental fleet.

Volunteering at the container is a great way to spend time in the cycling community while building confidence in your own bike maintenance skills. Whether you're looking to learn more about bikes, meet new people, or give back to the community, the container is a fun and supportive place to get involved.
